SHOCKING EVIDENCE OF THE RISK POSED BY PET SERVALS
A video from a zoo in Indiana, USA, reveals just how dangerous wild animals such as servals can be.
Copper, a four-year-old serval used by the zoo as an ‘educational’ animal in “thousands of interactions with people of all ages”, attacked a young boy leaving him with scratches to his head. Watch the shocking video by clicking here.
In Britain there are at least 50 servals kept by private owners: used for interaction programmes or as pets in private homes. Yet servals are categorised as dangerous animals under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976, and require a licence to be kept privately. Born Free is very concerned by the risk these and other dangerous wild animals pose when kept as pets or used for birthday parties, ‘cuddle’ sessions and ‘meet and greets’.
We strongly advise against keeping these animals as pets and you can find more information on our captive animals page.
Born Free is calling for a review of the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976, to make the law stronger and better able to protect both animals and people.
